The annual Harvest Feast thrown each fall by the Athens Farmers Market is the major fundraiser for the market's EBT value-doubling program. Held at the idyllic, rustic collection of homes known as the Hill, the party has become a highlight of the season, featuring fine foods from local chefs, beer and booze from our breweries and bars, both served under a oak and maple-diffused late afternoon light. This year's keynote speaker was Wholesome Wave's Michel Nischan, whom I interviewed for Modern Farmer in 2013. Wholesome Wave spearheads the national movement to increase EBT buying power at farmers markets.
In the photos below, which were taken back in October but I'm only now looking at them, you'll see Mr. Nischan; Matt McFerron and Daniel Ray of the Old Pal; Lee and Ashley Epting, of Epting Events and owners of the Hill; Chuck Ramsey of Pulaski Heights BBQ; Jessica Rothacker and Sal Speights of Heirloom Café; Joel Penn of the National; Josh Aaron of the Savory Spoon; the farmers of Cedar Grove and Little Flock; and some real cute kids.
