At least twice a week, I post a video about food and farming, with an emphasis on aquaculture. This is the second installment of this feature.
This short video doc is an easy introduction into the revival of the Chesapeake oyster, including some awesome footage of skipjacks, those classic sailboats once used by the oyster harvesters who prowled the Chesapeake. Christopher White wrote a whole book about the boats and the men who sailed them.
This video is the story of one company, Barren Island Oysters, but you can learn about the area's big wigs, Rappahannock Oyster Company, in this New York Times piece from March (which also features video). Moskin's NYT piece pointed me toward a story I ended up writing for Modern Farmer about oyster poachers.
